Overview

Unit Standard 242974 - Operate a counter-balanced lift truck - 7 Credits at NQF Level 3.

In order to direct the training, we will need to know if the Forklift is powered by:

  • Diesel 
  • Gas
  • Electric

and the Load Capacity

  • F1 - Up to 3 ton
  • F2 - Up to 7 ton
  • F3 - Up to 15 ton
  • F4 - Above 15 ton

1. Range of lifting trucks

  • Explain the functionality and capacity
  • Explain the different attachments
  • Discuss industrial and environmental conditions

2. Mechanical appreciation

  • Identify the different components and systems of the lift truck and their functions
  • Identify faults, damage and wear to these components and systems
  • State how to prevent such damage and minimise wear

3. Refuelling

  • Refuel the vehicle
  • Replace the gas cylinder or battery to prescribed standards and safety regulations

4. Inspections

  • Carry out and pre-start inspections
  • Carry out and start-up inspections 
  • Carry out and shutdown inspections
  • Conduct of routine maintenance required in terms of manufacturer specifications and relevant legislation to ensure operational fitness
  • Ensure the equipment undergoes scheduled and ad-hoc maintenance
  • Report faulty equipment

5. Safety 

  • Use the correct protective clothing and equipment
  • Implement selected mechanisms for the minimising of safety
  • Implement safe freight handling practices
  • Access available support systems and emergency services
  • Operate the lift truck in a working environment applying safety standards

6. Manoeuvring 

  • Manoeuvre a Lift truck with and without a load 
  • Implement safe freight handling practices (and the necessary precautions) giving cognisance to prevailing conditions

7. Loading and Offloading

  • Load on and off-load cargo with a lift truck
  • Implement safe freight handling practices (and the necessary precautions) giving cognisance to prevailing conditions

8. Stacking 

  • Stack cargo loads in the designated areas
  • Implement safe freight handling practices 
  • Achieve maximum work performance of lifting equipment and attachments 

9. Handling Cargo

  • Implement safe freight handling practices
  • Identify and classify freight
  • Transport, load, off-load and stack all types of cargo
